Careful What You Wish For

LookFast Food Workers In NYC Walk Out To Protest Low Pay, Poor Benefits. http://google.com/producer/s/CBIwsICsdg

I am not an accountant, but I do know math.  So, I couldn't help but notice something.  What do people consider a "livable wage" and can McDonalds afford it?   Not sure.  Think about it.

Let's say the "livable wage " is $15/hr, about 30k per year.  Since I do not know how many people are employed at McDonald franchises, I have to guess.   What I do know is there are a lot of franchises, and that McDonalds doesn't employ as many people as WalMart.  So the number is something less than 1M.  For the sake of argument, let us use 1M (actual number is 700,000 in US).

So if McD brings in $1B - a lot of money for sure - that is a mere $1000 per employee.  So in order to pay the living wage being demanded, McD and her franchises must bring in a whopping $30B just to meet payroll.  Adding in other business related costs such as rent, mortgages, utilities, licenses, training, transportation, marketing, PR, accounting, legal representation, etc...  The cost balloons to well over $100B.    McD makes a lot of cash - but not that much cash (company made $24B in 2012).

Criticism is well founded.  I do believe workers are being taken advantage of, but more critical thinking is required.

Really? About time..

234 Years Later, NH Slaves Are Granted... http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/234-years-nh-slaves-granted-freedom-19349649

I applaud the intent, but question the motive.  Unless the slaves are to receive something  else, this emancipation means nothing.  Posthumous freedom is not the same as receiving a posthumous medal or award.

What is Small Government? It's a White Male Thing Only Republicans Understand

Republicans Understand

Dear Friends,

I've been asked on numerous occasions to explain what conservatives mean by "small government".   How can the GOP reconcile this call for less government and more freedom while at the same time passing laws that restrict freedom and require more government (i.e. new abortion laws in Arkansas, North Dakota, and Mississippi - among other examples)?   Since I've heard no-one in the national media even attempt to explain, I thought I might give it a try.

Most of you who asked are not white, not male, and liberal by nature.  So it is understandable that you would be confused about the GOP agenda.  Allow me to explain.

First, a few definitions:

Small government means that the Feds do not interfere with my business, nor restrict my rights to free speech, free press, freedom to assemble, or right to bear arms.   I should be allowed to cheat my customers, insult people I do not like,  hold anti-gay rallies at funerals, and shoot anyone who gets in my way.

Responsible government has the moral obligation to prevent women from having abortions to save the lives of the unborn, block the sale of contraceptives that violate my religious principles, deport illegal immigrants and their children, keep gas prices low, remove all consumer protections that restricts commerce, provide our veterans with top-notch care, rid the world of evil dictators, and lead the world in business, science, medicine, education, military might and readiness.  All this - while cutting my taxes and without spending money.

A responsible government should never buy food for the hungry, enforce arcane laws, provide healthcare for the sick, or offer insurance of any kind for anyone - domestic or abroad.  Doing so only hurts business since it leaves us less opportunities to exploit people.

Taxes Will Solve Violence

This the dumbest, most asinine idea the Missouri GOP could possibly come up with.  Has no practical value, saves no lives, and a detriment to business - all from the so-called Business-friendly GOP.

To Rep. Don Young: 'Don't be Stupid'

Don Young Violates GOP 'Don't be Stupid' Policy

The cover-up is almost always worst than the crime. An awkward, thoughtless apology is worse than no apology at all. Witness US Congressman Don Young (Alaska), who told Ketchikan Public Radio

“"I used to own - my father had a ranch. We used to hire 50 to 60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes,” – Source: Latino FoxNews

In a sign of changing times, everyone jumped on him for using this racial slur “wetbacks” - even some prominent Republicans. So in an effort to ice the situation, we get this rather half-baked apology from Rep. Young:

“I apologize for the insensitive term I used during an interview in Ketchikan, Alaska. There was no malice in my heart or intent to offend; it was a poor choice of words. That word, and the negative attitudes that come with it, should be left in the 20th century, and I’m sorry that this has shifted our focus away from comprehensive immigration reform.” – Source: Politico

Notice he seems not to understand that intent means nothing. It is good that he had no malice in his heart, but a derogatory term is an insult regardless of whether you say it with a smile or a growl on your face. He makes no apology for the fact that it was even in his vocabulary to begin with. Nor did he explain why he couldn't have just said “Latinos”, “Hispanics”, or simply “migrant workers”.

The reason he doesn't say these things of course is simply because that was the environment he grew up in. His father, family, the rest of the people in his world used the term “wetbacks” quite often, so it became natural to say it. People would be more forgiving if he had said that in the first place, but no – he tries to tell us that such terms should be “left in the 20th Century” as if we were the ones who use such language as recently as 1999. The really sad thing is – many in his party still refer to Latinos in such terms, including some of their most active voters.

Mr. Young, your party is attempting to woo Latinos. Although you are not the first nor the last Republican to insult our brown-skinned brethren, your remarks run counter to the stated objectives of the GOP. To you and all of your knuckle-headed cohorts, I'm offering a free template for you all to use each and every time you need to apologize to minorities.

Yesterday, I insulted (insert name of group) by using an offensive slur. I deeply regret using that term, and will not repeat it again. As I am only human, I ask for your forgiveness and your understanding.”

Correctly identifying the group is key.  You have to show you know how to address them properly.  Then, the apology has to be personal - no references to party agenda or national dialogue on the issue of the day.  A simple, non-partisan, personal and sincere apology is most effective.

Then, leave it at that.... Accept the humility that you've cast upon yourself, ask for forgiveness, promise to never do it again – and you'd be amazed how positively people will react. I realize it is really, really hard for a conservative to admit to making an horrendous error – especially when it comes to apologizing to a group that you've long despised. But if the GOP really wants to win the confidence of the people and not rely on gerrymandering districts in order to remain relevant, then Republicans will have to man up and take its medicine.

Listen to your leader, Reince Priebus and take heed to the 2012 autopsy report – it hit a lot buttons. Do otherwise, and you and your party will perish.
