Careful What You Wish For

LookFast Food Workers In NYC Walk Out To Protest Low Pay, Poor Benefits. http://google.com/producer/s/CBIwsICsdg

I am not an accountant, but I do know math.  So, I couldn't help but notice something.  What do people consider a "livable wage" and can McDonalds afford it?   Not sure.  Think about it.

Let's say the "livable wage " is $15/hr, about 30k per year.  Since I do not know how many people are employed at McDonald franchises, I have to guess.   What I do know is there are a lot of franchises, and that McDonalds doesn't employ as many people as WalMart.  So the number is something less than 1M.  For the sake of argument, let us use 1M (actual number is 700,000 in US).

So if McD brings in $1B - a lot of money for sure - that is a mere $1000 per employee.  So in order to pay the living wage being demanded, McD and her franchises must bring in a whopping $30B just to meet payroll.  Adding in other business related costs such as rent, mortgages, utilities, licenses, training, transportation, marketing, PR, accounting, legal representation, etc...  The cost balloons to well over $100B.    McD makes a lot of cash - but not that much cash (company made $24B in 2012).

Criticism is well founded.  I do believe workers are being taken advantage of, but more critical thinking is required.
